Project Name: Muswellbrook Police Station
Location: William Street, Muswellbrook
Client:

Department of Commerce

Budget: $5.43 million
Time Analysis: 45 weeks

Construction of a new two (2) storey Police facility including offices and facilities for the Upper Hunter Valley Area Command and the refurbishment, restoration and upgrade of the existing Muswellbrook Police Station. The Project also incorporated a secure tunnel link to the Muswellbrook Court House, car parking, disabled access, landscaping and shared driveway facilities with the post office on the adjoining site.

The New building is a two storey building of 1550 square metres. The lower level is a secure area which contains holding cells, charge docks, finger print and forensic facilities, a secure van area, secure evidence rooms, interview and investigation offices. The secure areas are constructed to specific Police Standards; These cover detailed metal work to the cells and dock areas, extensive camera and monitoring systems and special police requirements for the construction of walls, ceilings and furnishings. The second level is made up of offices for the Upper Hunter Area Command which accommodates the Special Crime Units, Investigators and the Area Commander. There are also conference and training facilities, staff lunch and change rooms and an external terrace.

All walls to the ground level are masonry walls. Internal block walls are rendered and painted, and the external walls have an external skin of face brickwork. The upper level is clad externally with corrugated sheet metal with aluminium framed windows. The building has a metal roof supported by a steel structure. The upper level internal fixtures are typical of a commercial office space with suspended ceilings, steel framed partition walls, set gyprok feature ceilings, carpeted floors and ceramic tiles to amenities. The ground floor and the first floor are connected by a lift, internal and external stairs.

The existing police station building presented significant challenges as a building of historical significance which required the external façade and roof to be either preserved or restored. This included the main old police station, two separate buildings as well as another structure which were retained and connected together to create a single building which is now the Muswellbrook police station. The final construction is over an area of 420 square metres incorporating the old and the new building work. The oldest building is thought to be the oldest building in Muswellbrook and dates back to 1856.

The project won the "Public Buildings up to $5 million" category for Building Excellence at the 2007 MBA Awards Ceremony.
